As announced on May 19, Mystery Auctions are being banned from eBay this month. I don’t really understand the appeal of Mystery Auctions, but I assume it is basically a gambling endeavor.
Some eBayers are really passionate about Mystery Auctions. I joined this group thinking that it had to do with Pulsers: http://groups.ebay.com/forum/Mystery-Pulse-List/Welcome/1500025753
Surprisingly, there were $126,934 in eBay sales of Mystery Auctions last month. 9,189 mystery items were sold.
Here are all of the sales statistics of Mystery Auctions last month from eSeller Street: http://esellerstreet.com/mystery.htm

This is old news. Sorry, I forgot to check on what happened to the.rich.boy until tonight. He went NARU some time in March.
the.rich.boy sold $6,900 in eBooks in February, 2007. I can’t see what’s in this listing (listings removed by eBay) but he sold 19 of them for $10K each: Wii + PS3 + XBOX 360 + IPOD + IPHONE + PSP + HP LAPTOP
That’s a grand total of $196,993 sold through eBay in February. Now that’s pretty healthy sales.

Who do you suppose wrote this “press release”?
At least he could have given me a credit for sizing the Pulsers’ annual eBay sales.

Let’s estimate the amount of eBay sales of eBooks about making money. Sellers strive to differentiate their products by using different keywords and categories. So the best approach is to research the big sellers and multiply by a fudge factor to account for the small sellers. Let’s call the fudge factor 2.
I’ll start with Kekoa64. He sold $7.5K in 30 days a few months ago. jjfjq sold $4.5K and mysterygiant ~$1K. These three sellers had combined sales of over 1,135 eBooks during this 30 day period and $13K in revenue.
Multiplying by 2 produces an eBay sales figure of “Make Money” eBooks of $26K per month. That’s $312K per year! The only cost of sales is eBay fees. That’s the sweetest market I’ve ever seen.
Now I should mention for comparison purposes that Skip McGrath sells printed material on how to make money on eBay. During the same period, he sold $1.5K in books and another $9.5K in lighting kits for sellers.
Yes, this is a great niche, if you can get in it. But there are really only three sellers making a living on it out of 1 million eBay sellers. And these three aren’t just average people, either. They’re extremely sharp.
Details for Kekoa64 – 30 days of eBay sales in January, 2008.

The eBay Live! message this year was affiliate, affiliate, affiliate. Umm, ok, I guess that’s what I’ll do.
Unfortunately for eBay affiliates, the tracking cookies get overwritten by the next affiliate’s tracking cookie. For example, if you direct a buyer to eBay and they click on an affiliate link through a listing, your affiliate tracking cookie on the buyer’s desktop is replaced by the new one. Powerful affiliates such as Mpire eBay Pop and listing tools with store windows and “see my other items” links that are placed closest to the buying action will wipe out the small affiliates.
So what’s a quantitative researcher to do? SEO of course. Here’s a nice SEO article on tricks vs. content. I favor content of course. Organic SEO – What Does It Really Mean?
